Playing in the Sun!
April 28, 2015:
It seems like last week's snow was a blip and spring really is here! We spent lot's of time outdoors playing in the sun. A big thank you to Mrs. Palmer who set-up an obstacle course for both kindergarten classes to enjoy! We also had our lunch outside on a picnic! With the increased sunshine, we will likely spend more time outdoors. It is a good idea to pack a hat and sunscreen for the future.
During our literacy centre time, we reviewed short and long vowels and had different opportunities to put our new learning into practice.

What is Special about Fullday Kindergarten?
As I briefly wrote in my introduction via your child's zippy, the revised full day kindergarten curriculum places a heightened focus on inquiry learning. This means children shape the topic they want to learn about and educators facilitate meaningful learning opportunities. This is meant to encourage children's natural curiosity while educators ask open-ended questions for child-initiated exploration and discovery. In our classroom, you will find a blend of traditional and inquiry learning models.
Parents often ask how they can support their child's learning at home. When children are in kindergarten the best way to support your child's learning is by spending time with them exploring their world, talking about your findings and asking questions. Some of the tenets of fullday kindergarten are: exploration & investigation, creative thinking, observing and learning.

We balance this inquiry approach to learning with some time on fundamental literacy and numeracy skills. With Mrs. Iversen, Room 8 learned the entire alphabet and we have now begun learning about vowels and phonemic blends (like sh-, th-, sp-). In the mornings, we spend some time writing our best sentence using our "Sentence Starters" and Popcorn Words (e.g. like, a, he, and). For some of our SKs, I have made new writing prompts and am looking forward to some new sentences :)
Much of our language skills is developed in centres with games and fun language-based activities. This is also an effective way at tailoring activities with respect to the child's current level. We are also developing our emergent literacy skills through our routine of looking at books and sounding out unfamiliar words after both nutrition breaks.
This is a snapshot of a typical day in Room 8!
Hello Parents and Guardians!
My name is Anna Tulczynska (Tul-chin-ska) or as the kids call me (and more simply!) Ms. T.
I have been supplying for Mrs. Iversen since her maternity leave and am now officially in Room 8 until the end of the year.
It has been a pleasure getting to know your child the last few weeks and I am looking forward to all of our learning!
You can connect with me before or after school. I am usually in the classroom before the entry bell, so feel free to enter our classroom early or chat after school. Alternatively, you can email me at tulczynskaa@hdsb.ca or communicate with me through your child's communication book in their zippy. Do not hesitate to share any concerns, questions or feedback you may have!

Making Music with Rhythm Works!
Monday April 27, 2015:
Today was a very special day! A dynamic musical duo called Rhythm Works visited Sir Ernest Macmillan and put on a spectacular show! Without speaking, they communicated by making music with everyday objects, such as water basins, garbage lids and sticks. It put the whole school into a dancing groove!
In the afternoon, we continued our underwater inquiry. We surveyed each other to see whether we preferred dolphins, Orca whales or stingrays. We then learned how we can show this information in a bar graph. We then made our own aquarium - with lots of seashells! Shanaya enjoyed showing us how we can hear the sea in shells, and Drew & Jad enjoyed making seaweed for our aquarium.

More underwater exploration!
Friday April 24, 2015:
Today we continued our inquiry into underwater life. We brainstormed ways we can measure a blue whale. Some of us used blocks, rulers and even toys dinosaurs to measure the whale. It was very large indeed! We worked collaboratively, measuring different parts of the whale and then adding all our block measurements to find the length of the whole animal!
We also made our own sting rays! We learned about the way they shrink and grow to move in water, as well as the many uses of their tentacles. Our day ended with our Grade 5 Reading Buddies.

Last Day Today
Thank you to everyone for the well wishes and gifts for my new baby boy! He will be arriving Mid to Late May and I will be sure to post some pictures on the blog.
Ms. T will be supplying for this week and possibly some of next week, until they have hired the new teacher for the rest of the school year.
I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching each and everyone of you! My SKs who have been with me for 2 years... I wish you all the best in grade 1. I have really enjoyed watching you grow! To my JKs, I am sad that I won't be able to teach you next year. But I look forward to seeing you again when you are in grade 1 (that is when I will be back!)
Continue to work hard!
Mrs. Iversen :)

My Last Day of Work
My last day of work will be this coming Tuesday, April 7th. I will be in again on Wednesday to speak with the new supply teacher that will be covering me until the week of April 13th. They will be hiring a teacher to complete the year.
I will make sure that she will be prepared to take over and know all about the classroom and the wonderful students.
It should be a very smooth transition for the students.
See you on Tuesday!

Madison and Addison put all of the popcorn words in order and wrote them all down, all by themselves! Wow!!!
Data Management
Last week and this week, the students have been learning about Data Management. They are learning how to come up with a question with 3 possible answers, then asking their friends which answer they prefer. Then they are using Tally Marks to record their answers.
4 tally marks plus one across makes a group of 5 tally marks. Ask your child about what they learned? Ask them to show you how to make a group of 5 Tally Marks!
